Do I need to select "Rated" for the first gam...

I have initiated 2 games but I selected not rated because I am not. But, does that mean that I am also not making progress toward obtaining a rating?

It means you will be playing THAT game with no rating loss [or gain] at the end of the game.
If you want to gain rating points you have to set them as rated games.

if you select unrated, the outcome of the game will have no effect on your rating. thus, i could win against a million people but if all the games were unrated, my rating wouldn't change. If you do select rated, you still will have to complete 5 games before you will see a change in your current rating as you are a provisional player. After 20 games you lose the p in front of your score and your good to go. Hope this helped
