My favorite magazine is The Monthly Chess Instructor.
The thing I like most is the layout.
First, there is the opening section. One opening is explained in detail each month. It starts out simple (1.e4 develops queen and bishop) and gets to a more complicated position (like one of the main lines of the Open Ruy Lopez).
Then there is the middlegame section. In this section are 60 puzzles/questions. The first 40 are tactics(random pins, skewers, etc). The last 20 are about formulating a plan (picking up from real middlegames and seeing how they proceeded and why).
Next, is the endgame section. They look at a few endings of each kind (king and pawn, knight, bishop, bishop vs knight, etc) and try to explain the winning technique.
The next section is one deeply annotated game covering all three aspects of the game (opening, middlegame, and endgame) in great detail.
Then, in the back, is a section where readers submit their games for annotation. One lucky reader's game is picked each month.
The layout really makes it all work. The price is really reasonable too. I can't wait for next month's issue to get here!
One should sub to a mag, It keeps you up to date with what's
happening and most have tactical puzzles to keep your powder dry.
Once I put out a joke appeal on The Corner for chess magazines thoughout
the world and have collection of 17 mags from all over the globe most
of which I cannot read. But can of course play over the games.
CHESS & BCM are usually very good. Scottish Chess is scaled down version,
NIC as I've saif before is a bit lofty. MCI, the mag Paul mention is OK but
very little 'what's happening' coverage. (and of course too much emphasis on
endings. 🙁 ).
Properly played a game of chess should never reach an ending.
If you have not mated your oppoent by move 25 then offer a draw
and start again.
I only subscribe to Chess Life from the USCF. Fair magazine but some of the games go way past me but it keeps me current with what is going on out there in the chess world.
I haven't heard of the other mags mentioned in this thread. Where do you find them? Can I just google search chess mags? (Of course I can, duh!!) but I too would like to know what the good ones are.

What chess magazines like newinchess you read? What do you like about them?
I like the annotated games, the puzzles, columns if that is the correct word(Danny King in CHESS!) and sometimes the interviews.
NIC is good,CHESS is better.
toet.
Originally posted by vishyanandI don't remember the website. A friend recommended it to me, and I was mailed a free issue after calling. The inside of the magazine has their site and address/phone number. I will try to dig the last copy up. A new one should be here inside a week.
where can I find information on The Monthly Chess Instructor.?
Anyone interested just reply, and I will PM you with the info when I get it.
The few copies I have if MCI do not list a website which I found refreshing
also in one copy they screwed up the solutions from 5 onwards.
they give the solutions to 5 twice so the sol to 7 is actually for 6 and the
sol for 8 is for 7 etc.etc.
If I recall one of the dummy solutions works for the wrong
puzzle. I posted it on here about two years ago.

Originally posted by vishyanandI used to read Chess Life from the USCF, and NIC now and again. Since becoming a corrispondence player however, I've dropped them. Most chess magazines focus about 90% of there stories on the OTB chess scene, and very little on corrispondence play, which I consider superior.
