I was just thinking about the Latvian (1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 f5!?) and the Schliemann (1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 f5!?). It got my wondering if there's a name for an early f5 push in the Italian?

I've never seen it or heard of it before, but maybe it does have a name. Lastly, is it really that bad for black?

It's called the Rousseau Gambit. Don't know much about it.

Thank you Goshen 🙂

You're welcome. I'm sure you can pull of a brilliant win with it though, against lower rated players like myself.

it doesnt look bad to me, but then again I don't play 1.e4 or 1.... e5 so I'm not very aware of the ideias in the position. However it looks to me like white can't accept the pawn, as white will then play d4 and recover the pawn with tempo

Years ago, Tim McGrew had a column called the Gambit Cartel. He wrote more than one article on this variation. If you go to www.chesscafe.com, and look in the archives for The Gambit Cartel by Tim McGrew, all of his articles are available for download in one file.

I don`t know how the theory goes either but I would play d4 if someone surprised me with it

d4 seems to just dominate black after f5.

Thanks to everyone for their input 🙂

I'll have a look into it, so thank you for the resources paulbuchmanfromfics.

I agree it's not 100% sound but perhaps in a quick game (bullet or fast blitz) or against someone inexperienced it might with worth a chuckle.

People love to see gambits but they are not ready to sacrifice themselves.

The latvien gambit require courage because it let go of two pawns.

but this do mean there is a refutation to this one.

I would play d3 and castle kingside, Black cannot castle so easily.

There is no need for d4 right away, while it is not bad.

Vut, by no mean this is a refutation.

Forget what Rybka can say..

They it is bad, then you follow Rybka'S lead to see its evalution suddenly telling white is in trouble.
