Ever been analysing a position on a seperate board, then failed to put the pieces back properly? Take a look at game id: 279014 In my analysis the queen had made it onto h6, so I made the move without checking!! Duh.....

Playing Email chess with mr. frosty before we joined the site... I made a move... I sent him my PGN that had my move, plus the next 10 as I figured them playing around with the board... I felt like an idiot... Like giving the coach's notebook to the Evil Coach in "Water Boy" (good movie!)

Winboard is a solution to your problem, you can paste the text in and move the pieces around and back them up better than using the analysis function at RHP... might want to check it out.

Another curious thing is Chessgames.com's Opening Explorer. You can find it at http://www.chessgames.com/perl/explorer
- a very useful tool, I think, for the post-mortem analysis...

You will need something like this to view your pgn files...

http://www.tim-mann.org/xboard.html

Take a look at winboard and see if that's anything like what you're
looking for. It's freeware, as well.

You can load in pgn games, set up the board however you want, etc.

Thanks, already downloaded winboard & crafty & SCID after doing a few queries on this site.

Winboard is good but if you are stepping thru openings it's good to see all the other alternative moves availible. Dereck's post is a good site which shows the options after each move. Is there freeware that I can use to do similar off-line? (I think SCID should do it but maybe I just haven't played with it too long)

In New Zealand, the expression used would be "Oh, bugger!".
