It sucks when that happens.

When I first came to RHP, I started a new method which eliminated almost all of those really stupid mistakes. Every time it's your move, you don't touch the mouse until you've done two things. First, you take a moment to look at every possible move you can make, no matter how obvious the move you need to make seems to be. Then, pick the one you like most.

Then look at every possible move your opponent can make. I find myself catching a lot of this kind of thing before I make the mistake nowadays.

gee, I always try to lull my victim to sleepiness with an endless boring monologue, and then move in for a kill.

happened to me a few nights back. Did not really check the board and ended up losing the queen. Did not realise till the following morning and it hurt *so* much. Oh well, a lesson learned

I always count my pieces. Once, my opponent took a knight. I forgot a knight was there and made a "good" positional pawn move. He moved his knight away and I was stuck a piece down. Also, occasionally, I'll make the wrong order of moves in an opening and get caught on it and lose the whole game because of the switched order.
