All well and nice, but in my opinion, you are defending the indefensible.

In over the board chess, it would be the equivalent of a player with a decent amount of time left on the clock and about to be checkmated, just getting up an walking away from the board with no explanation.

I'm sure it's happened, but all the explanations in the world about why the losing player would do such a thing, does not excuse such poor form and manners.

    Hi

    Bad manners? Nonsense.

Nobody has the right to demand a player resigns.
It is the players choice when he wants to quit the game. Nobody else's.

    What next?
Players a pawn up start insisting on resignation?

Tournament Contollers walking around with an MCO
declaring games won and lost in the opening?

My Grandad fought in two wars to give me other players the right to resign
when and how we see fit. Not because someone else thinks we should.

    That's bad manners. 😉

I've seen a few players simply walk away in disgust at their own play.
They walked away from tjhe board and out the the tournament.
It happens, chess players are an odd lot.

    The most famous case:

Steinitz – von Bardeleben, Hastings 1895

Is a perfect example of chess writers copying crap from each other
    without checking the facts.

After Steinitz's 25th move von Bardeleben up and left the game allowing
    Steinitz to win on time.

Very unsportsman like behaviour. Sore loser etc etc.

Infact von Bardeleben had protested to the organisers about the clapping and cheering
that greeted the end of every game. So not to disturb the other players, he
    quietly left the playing hall.

As usual Edward Winter has all the facts.

    Here is the brilliant game.

Delighted to see you rail so forceably against the perceived coercion of players to resign against their wishes.

Don't however, let my previous posts, nor the fact we are in agreement on the right of a player to resign as and when he/ she sees fit, dissuade you from your crusade.

    What if 22. ...Kxe7?

Does white have better than 23. Re1, or is Re1 better than I think it is?

    Hi
the real beauty of 22...Kf8 is:

The e7 Rook is hanging, the Knight is hanging, the Queen is hanging,
The Rook on c1 is hanging and if it goes it's mate so the King is hanging.
Every White piece including the White King is under attack.

Many wins appear if 22...Kxe7. Mates or winning the Black Queen.
Take your pick. I like this one.

so which was the 'blunder move'? was it 20 .. g6? i guess that 20 .. Rxf8 would have led to a draw?

edit: by the way, 17. d5 !! a beautiful pawn sacrifice to make a perfect stable for the night. the board looks affterwards so empty, but full of dangers, is a nice game.
