This little opening trap has been sitting in the back of my mind for nigh on 20 years. Good to see it come to life. If only it was an OTB game. Warning to Sicilian Dragon players, f4 is not just to avoid theory.

Ah the good the old Levenfish.

Levenfish was a great player who history has been unkind too.
Or should we say Russia was unkind to.

He should have taken part in the tournament to find a successor to Alekhine
but apparently he was not allowed to by the Russians.

I recall looking for a win of his v Botvinnik (I hate it when books refer
to a game but never give it) I stumbled upon this.

Any ideas what was going on here.

Levenfish plays a lovely game of chess and Botvinnik appears to
go for a trick perpetual. However he does not claim the draw even
though the position repeats about 6 times. Do you think he (and his
opponent) were under the impression that it had to be 3 moves on
the trot?

Botvinnik plays on a Rook and Bishop down for a few moves.
It certainly is an odd game.

That game is indeed weird. Why Botvinnick didn’t take a draw in a lost position?

Anyway, back to f4 vs. the Dragon. Looking at the RHP database it seems I was beaten to it by a couple of games. Reminds me of when I was just starting out and I “found” a nice gambit line vs. the Petroff. “Its bloody obvious” my opponent said in the post-mortem. News to me that it was called the Cochran’s Gambit(or something like that).

Worse, Black gets checkmated, unless he plays 10...Kg8. And anyway can't black play 9...Nd7 or Bd7?

I just read the terms of service, and it's just what i expected, text to cover there ass in case some nut job wants to sue, there is nothing there related to RHP's forums. Nothing there to say people have to post information that will benefit everyone including elady.

it seems to be an almost identical game to the Fischer/Larsen game Portoroz 1958, game number two, in My 60 Memorable games.
