Like Ravello said, some people take a vacation or leave the site for awhile and their oppenents claim timeouts and then when he or she returns, the rating will go back up as a result of them playing again.

So there is no advantage in doing this like for tournaments?

Much to the annoyance of a lot of players that enter banded tournaments, some of the players who 'suffer' these timeout rating drops enter such tournaments below their true rating level, and of course do enjoy a significant advantage. But you have to ask yourself if any real pride can be enjoyed in winning a tournament this way.

Where do people go on vacation too? a cave? the moon?
There are pc's and wireless internet connections all over the world.
Cant most of these people go online for a few minutes to bang out some moves?
Unless there taking a vacation from chess?

I went on holiday to France and tried to log on and play a few moves. The internet connection was in a dark corner of a pub - couldn't see the keyboard and the French keyboard has full stops, @, commas etc all in different places. Nightmare. And I was too tight to pay for more than 15 minutes access - had to get the kids to log me on in the end

I play on this site practically everyday. When I am on vacation it is because I'd like to relax for a period of time, and that means not logging onto this site like I usually do and making moves.

P.S. Sometimes it even means I don't have an internet connection where I am! (Yes, these places do exist)

it would just be boring to compete in a tournement with players rated 1000 points below you, besides you also would have to stop playing for about a month since max rating is checked when you enter a tournement.

And sometimes players resign a load of games to enter tournaments which they should win well below their realistic ranking.
This seems a sad way to win though

We call that Sand Bagging when someone does that for OTB tourneys.

Some towns I have been through were more than a hour out from any town large enough to have a library with a computer. Not everybody can just go to a library and log in. Contrary to "popular belief" not all Americans have a ton of cash.
