You get 1 point for a win and half a point for a draw only in tournaments.
In this system rating is calculated differently. So you might improve your rating by drawing higher rated opponents.

The FAQ contains the exact calculations for how ratings are adjusted, but in the case of a draw if your opponent is better than you, you gain points, if worse than you, you lose, if same, you stay where you are. In all cases, the amount gained/lost is less than had you won or lost the game.
Provisional ratings are calculated totally differently. Please read the FAQ if interested.
