The link below points to a tombstone found in a Dutch graveyard
(Zorgvlied in Amsterdam) and it shows half a chessboard. The caption
says Mate in one move, but for the life of me (pun intended) I
can't see what this move is. Can you? If yes, will you share it with
me? :-)

The position is so simple that I'm wondering if maybe it doesn't have
a solution, and it's only a joke to keep me busy for a while. That
would be pretty lame though. :-)

Come to think of it: there seem to be 17 possible moves, none of
which result in checkmate. It may depend on how you define 'one
move', but I only see mate in two moves for white, with one by black
in between (obviously). Is it a bogus question, a joke, or what?

WHAT AM I MISSING???!!😠

Easy there tiger! There's no mate in 1...seems like a joke or
something in order to get people to stop and stare at the deceased's
tombstone for hours.

Nice post though 🙂

After a couple of hours of sleep, I woke up. In the few seconds that it
took for me to wake up, all of a sudden I realized that there IS a way
to mate in one.

I won't spoil it for you by giving you the answer, but trust me: mate in
one is possible. Realy, no joke. 😀

HOLD ON!!!! Is it that the....nah, I'll say it in a game so as not to spoil
it...

Ah..... had to think about it for a minute. I like that though, good
practice, those puzzles.

Well done Mike....I'm still waddling along in the land of dimness. My
attempt was incorrect in other words. In fact my attempt was
ridiculous! 😕

And no before some smarty pants asks me if I thought it was that one
of the rooks takes off jumps over the king with a perfect double
somersault thinking he was a knight only to magically transform back
into a rook delivering a never before seen in the history of chess
checkmate, no, it wasn't that.

That was my second guess 😀

Mark
Rather feeling that he should have worked it out by now

Give the boy a medal. I've worked it out. Finally. From now on y'all can
call me Mr. Simpleton.

If the white piece is a bishop - rather than a king as I thought at first -
it's easy peasy lemon squezy!

Do we see here your unconcious mind working towards a solution? LOL.
Serendipity rules for me - I saw this in a game by Morphy I do
believe! Nice puzzle.

So the white piece is a king then.... well if it were black's turn he could
just knock over his king and resign but that wouldn't be mate and
T1000 tells me it's white to move... mmmmm???

Got it! White used the little known rule named after the Polish GM,
Kinglooski. This can be used in games over 50 moves where old kings
are likely to be in some discomfort. Invoking this rule allows the
player's king to temporarily leave the board for a toilet break.

Next problem? 😉

Ok, I am totally failing to see a mate in 1 for white. Come ON,
people... if Crafty doesn't see it, where is it? Or maybe Crafty is as
dumb as I am. Mark, enlighten me (In our game, if you want.)
