The few chess books I have read do not show the response to an e4
opening by white, could someone advise the response and the 'likely'
next 3/4 moves by both sides. I have had qute a few players open
with e4 recently and seem to be getting myself in a bit of a mess.
Help would be appreciated. Regards Martin

This is probably too broad a subject to easily address in a news group
and one frought with religious fervor amongst those with their pet
openings. However the Exeter site may be of some help as several of
the major openings are covered there and this may help you get
started. There are many others but this is a good one to start with. Try
it at http://www.ex.ac.uk/~dregis/DR/Openings/openings.html
Best of luck.

Eric Schiller's 'Complete Defense to King Pawn Openings' is a good
start. It's based on the Caro-Kann 1.-/c6. It emphasises on
understanding and pattern recognition, rather than studying a myriad
variations and sub-variations.
To 1.d4: 'Complete Defense to Queen Pawn Openings', based on the
Tarrasch.

If I can get this book in 'Little Belgium', it should be a piece of cake
to get it anywhere else, except the Seychelles perhaps. LOL. No
seriously: at Amazon.com I guess it will be available. I don't know
where you live. If not in an Anglo-Saxon country but in Europe for
instance, there are many opportunities to order it online, as I did in
Belgium from <marchand.be>, my regular bookshop. Good luck! Jan
Hi Martin! Against 1.e4 I also like to play the Alekhine (1.-/Nf6) and
the Scandinavian/Center Counter (1.-/d5). I've also read Dave's
enthusiasm with the Philidor. I hardly know it and it's not often played.
But Dave, being an experienced player, surely must have his reasons
for it. If I remember well, ChessBase has a CD-ROM on the Philidor.
The ChessBase openings CD-ROMs always come with appr. 7,000
illustrative games, of which a few hundreds annotated and/or fully
analysed. Jan
I am sure that a ton of people will talk of sicillian and Caro Kan and
the Pirc.
My recomendation is getting "Winning With The Philidor" by Tony
Kosten.
The 1st chapter on the Mestel variation (Philidor Counter Gambit) is
great and the Hanham is very good.
People can say what they want to about the Philidor...but if you know
it...it is tough to beat...and not many other people do.
Dave
Hi Martin! I see my post on Dave's enthusiasm for the Philidor
Defence is still lying in wait to be moderated. Yes, ChessBase has a
CD-ROM on the Philidor. i've just checked that for you and anyone
interested. The CD-ROM comes with 13,400 games, 300 of which
annotated, training database and a tree of all games. Isn't that worth
$ 22.07?
Other openings CD-ROMs are: King's Indian with h3 - Nimzo Indian
4.f3 Sämisch variation - Scandinavian - How to play the Nimzo-
Indian? - The Slav Defence - Queen's Gambit with 5.Bf4 - Bird
Opening - Téti Opening - Meran Variation D47-D49 (ECO codes) - The
Accelerated Dragon B34-B39 - Classical Sicilian - French without Nc3 -
Modern Benoni -The Sveshnikov sicilian - The ABC of Chess Openings -
Trrompowski Attack - Budapest Gambit - Modern Ways of playing the
Sicilian - King's Indian structure with f5-f4. Prices: all $ 22.07 (without
VAT for non-European Union countries), except the Slav, $ 25.96
(without VAT). They have many more other training CD-ROMs (tactics,
strategy, endgame...). Jan
