After 1.b4 black cannot maintain opposition. That means he will have to let the white king approach his pawn, and lose it (the b4-pawn covers two defending squares). It then is K+2 connected pawns against K. Black will not be able to block white or keep the position with the king on the 7th rank. Easy win (stalemate tricks to be avoided).

My reasoning was more like 11.Kd6 and winning the b-pawn (threatening to promote the c-pawn), but this is equally good.

after 2... bxc4 3.Kxc4 Kd6 4.Kb5 Kc7 5.Ka6 Kb8, an interesting position is reached.

It comes down to a tempo. The black king can shuffle between b8 and a8, but the white pawn reaches b7 at exactly the right time.

This falls under the rule, "With King on the 6th rank, in front of the pawn, the stronger side always wins". It does not matter where the black King starts in this position, making 'tempo' considerations irrelevant.

Thanks for the clarification. What was I thinking? 🙄

The win with best play is using a strategy known as "turning his flank":

1.b4 Ke5 2.c4 Kd6 3.c5+ Kd5 4.Ke3 Ke5 5.Kf3 Kf5 6.Kg3

Black's flank has been turned...he can't continue to hold the opposition because it would put his K outside the queening square.

Ke5 7.Kg4 Ke6 8.Kf4 Kf6 9.Ke4 Ke6 10.Kd4 Kd7 11.Kd5
