I was just wondering how much time some of you spend studying
ending books. I don't spend alot...but I have some pretty good ones
and about maybe once a week i will grab one out of the Averbakh set
(which I highly recommend to all serious players) or the BCE by
Fine...and kick around for an hour or so.

I think we all spend more time on openings and middlegame
tactics....or just going through comlete games...which is what I am
always doing.

I've read that studying endgames is the most neglected part of chess.
And so I did: neglected it. Shame on me. Too lazy? Most likely.
Though I DO have decent books on it in my chess-library:
* Strategie der Endspiele (Endgame Strategy - Shereshevsky)
* Erfolgreich im Endspiel (Successful Endgame Play - Averbakh)
* Turmendspiele 1 & 2 (Rook Endings - Averbakh)
* Four volumes by Dr Max Euwe
and to start shortly (I hope so!) studying this phase, I bought
Averbakh's 'Chess Endings - Essential Knowledge'
Oh well, I really never had the time, really, nor the energy left to
study chess in general... Must develop a 'mini-max-programme'. Jan

Studying endings does suck...it is the most boring part...I lean
towards studying complete games where I can get a handle on all
three parts. I really like hitting "The Week in Chess" on the net
because Mark covers alot of the major tourneys and I can always
download the games to a pgn viewer and run through them. You
asked if I had any software...well that is how I do it. It is free and alot
of fun.

But seriously..studying these things hard is really good for
retention..especially if you hit tourneys on a regular
basis..otherwise..if you just play here..then having the books there for
reference is enough. The best thing for here is middlegame books I
have found...they can save a bad opening if you know your
tactics...and that is what I believe in...although I am in two really
harsh endgames right now...and nothing that I did gave me any
advantage.

I guess my win streak had to end somewhere.

Thanks for the thoughts Jan...and for the major comments in general
on the movie post...pretty cool!

It is like you say, and is too boring, for example I received classes
from a cuban IM during a year, he taught us how to prepare like they
do in cuba. And it is very hard, the point is that We spent like two
weeks In rooks endgames, first there are too many rules you have to
memorize by hart(when you are defending is different than when you
are attacking), nine years later I forgot 90 percent of that, I have the
idea and some rooles But I know If I have to use it I could make a
mistake or have to spent a lot of time trying to look for the best
moves. I prefer seeing lile you many games special what I play, this
way I see every part of the games and take ideas for my own
games...
