Just wondering why you choose to play--or have chosen to give up on--the Pirc as Black (1.e4 d6 for those who don't know.)

I used to play it alot. I basically gave it up because I hated playing against the Classical. Maybe I was just playing the wrong systems against it, but for me it was hard to avoid boring, drawish positions.

I play it often (a variant). It's a good way to shake up white's pawn structure and I like to attack the queen side.

Ex-Pirc player here; gave up because of the Classical too. It may be just me, but it seems white doesn't need any effort to get a superior position in that line.

I played it for a few days then gave it up. I hated it.

Because it rocks. If white decides to close the center then it gives black excellent chances on the kingside. If not, it still gives black equal and drawish position. Its also very similar to KID so you dont have to learn two completely different openings against e4 and d4.

i'm not much of a pirc player i played it at first because i knew it was hard for higher rated players to dominate me. i like the sicilian better because it has way more counterplay and attacking chances for black. also i love playing kid lines which are similar to the pirc and sometimes transpose when the center is closed the game is mine!!! or drawn.

It was too hard for me to grasp all the subtleties of the Pirc. I would always come away somehow inferior in the opening. I switched to the Caro-Kann and found it much easier to use. In the Caro you can pretty much make the "normal" looking move and it's usually the right one.

Pirc is an awesome defence! I have very good results with it, especially since a lot of poeple look down on it(for no good reason mind you)...it can be a very sharp opening. Offers black good chances

Seirawan recommends it vs. e4 in his 'Winning Chess Openings' book. He recommends the KID vs. d4. I've heard you can play the Pirc vs. both e4 and d4. That would be nice. Would you say the Pirc is more tactical or strategical?

I didn't want to do it....

Game 2261780

It can be tactical or positional - depends on what white plays, the Austrian tends to be tactical, the Classical tends to be positional.

Improvements for me are at 24.Kb1! +- and 27.Qc3 -+ - both evals. according to F9.

Strategical and tactical are twins, you can't have one without the other....theres no such thing as a just tactical game or just strategical...-.-
