Anyone know why chess sets/boards are so expensive in the UK? Are we just getting ripped off as usual? For instance looking at an ebony set with a nice board, it would be almost cheaper to fly to the EU or US and bring it back (and hope customs don't stop you on the way in 😉 ).

They are expensive (£800 for a set and board!!!). I hear that the London chess center imports them from somewhere like the Ukraine. Maybe have a look on Ebay 😉

I did look on ebay a while ago.

I may be wrong but I had a feeling it may have been some of the same expensive chess stores selling there anyway (at a slightly reduced price - they had minimums).

What I'd really like to know is who the actual suppliers are, to cut out the mddle man. I've searched on the web but no luck yet.

Are customs so bad in the UK that a nice set that can be purchased for say $150 US from the House of Staunton would come anywhere close to rivaling the prices you are talking about once shipping and duties are added? My rule of thumb ordering from the US into Canada is that I will pay in $Can roughly double the $US price once shipping and duties are added, but of course our money is worth less than the American dollar, even though it is much more attractive.

It may be possible. Many stores in US wouldn't consider sending a board this way though. Plus what happens if there is a problem be a tad expensive to send back 😉 It just seems absurd that the cost is so much more in the UK!

Don't know if anyone saw Columbo yesterday - maybe using pepper pots is the answer 😀.
Btw how about Marshall remembering almost 150 games from a simultaneous display the day before - must have been upset to forget the remaining two!!!

I ordered some very nice wooden pieces from the House of Staunton, and an excellent board from somewhere else (I can find out if you're interested). The price came to around $200-$300 (AUD) all up, and I'm very happy with both.

If something went wrong along the way, you're right in that it would be difficult to return, but that's the risk with online ordering. 🙁

It depends what you want really, I bought a nice wooden set (including the board) in Toy'R'Us for under a tenner!

When my House of Staunton set arrived one of the Queens was chipped. I let them know and they sent me another right away, no questions asked. If the shipment is insured you're covered against anything major. The worst part for me would be the wait, especially if oceans have to be crossed.

I bought a deadly 12% silver set and board in Bolivia for €25. It then cost me another €20ish to post home.
