Hi,
I know this is a common move, I just checkmated a person in 7 half moves, I moved 4 times whereas he moved thrice.

Is this the minimum no. of moves needed to checkmate a person?
I am very happy, I checkmated a guy who had about 150 points more than me.

Fastest checkmate ever = 1. g4 e5 2. f4 Qh4 ++

but for future reference it is in 4 moves not 7.
1 whole move is when black and white move, one move by one colour is a half a move.
Hi everybody,
Thank you for all your replies. Although there can be a checkmate in less than 7 half moves, this checkmate is the most practicle one as there is a lot of chances of this happening as opposed to the other.
The other one that you guys are mentioning is very difficult to obtain. Its possible only when you are playing both white and black and hoping for a black win. 😉
Originally posted by mwmillerFool's Mate is the quickest. Black wins in two moves. There are eight possible sequences of moves leading to 2...Qh4#. White can win in a similar manner in three moves (5 half-moves). There are ~ 290 sequences of moves leading to 3.Qh5#
I think 'fools mate' is the quickest. 2 moves.

In the position below, black gets mated quickly if she grabs the white queen. But if she refuses the bait, white has won a pawn and has the edge.
This position arises after 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 d6 3.Bc4 Nc6 4.Nc3 Bg4 5.h6 Bh5 6.Nxe5!
