what is your favorite opening and why? I've been trying to learn more about good openings. What I'm finding though, is that a lot of people on this site tend to not really follow openings.

Well, I typically play e4 and hope to get into the Ruy Lopez, but I also like playing the French with the white pieces...

Why do you think people here don't follow openings? What's your guideline?
If you have a look at my games you will see that almost every line I play can be found in books or databases.Though I play a lot of sidelines that are a bit harder to find.I've been told that most of my choices can't be found in MCO,but I don't have MCO,so I'm not sure if it's true.Nevertheless,it are known lines.

Well, i'm sure everything is an opening that's been written down somewhere.. however I will start something, and after move two or three, it's nothing like any of the variations I have listed. Which is fine, but Im trying to learn things. Thats all.

I guess nobody has a favorite opening. I though this would be a more popular thread!🙄

Well, everything you play is an opening, written down or not.But you were talking about known openings,I assume.I don't feel that people here don't play known openings.A lot of obscure sidelines, yes, but mostly it are all known lines.Maybe it's just that you don't have a lot of material to guide you?

About the favourite openings, well, maybe people don't want to give it away. Here are mine.As white I usually go for the bishop's opening, closed sicilian, four pawns attack against the Alekhine and the rest I don't know the names of.
As black I play Alekhines defense,Ruy Lopez,Petroff,Dutch Leningrad,Nimzo-Indian,Budapest defense(once in a while) or something I want to try out at that moment.

Oh,and as white you can expect a try of the King's bishop gambit in the near future 😀

j, I didn't post because I already told you about my opening system, but here goes:

I play the St. George Defense as Black (1.e4 a6 2.d4 b5 etc.) and the St. George Reversed (beginning 1.b4) as White. Sometimes I play 1.Nf3 followed by 2.b4

If my opponent takes me "out of book" (and the St.G is a small book) then I just wing it.

EDIT: Oh, you asked "why?" as well as "what?"
Several reasons. Among others,
1. Very little theory
2. I get familiarity with similar positions on both sides of the board
3. They're positions with which not many opponents are familiar
4. Using an inferior opening gives me certain psychological advantages and satisfactions

As white, I hope always to get into REuy Lopez with c3, otherwise 1.e4 and we'll see, that's just not that easy to handle with many theoretical ideas (I just learned about St. G.) and stuff, but it's all fine.
As Black, I'm not yet fixed to one opening, i like Alekhine (especially against 4-pawns-attack) , or najdorf variation in sicilian, or a king's indian against closed games, but i'm always willing to test something new...

When I get the chance I will play the Fried Liver as white.
I usually have mixed succes but the games are normally entertaining 🙂

Bird (f4) and Sicilian: Najdorf (Wich is played in Game 308236, between David Tebb and LittleBear) are my personal favourites.

Hey, with that opening book, what on earth are you doing NOT being a member of the Hardcore Pawn Stars?! 😠😛

You're quite welcome you know, should you want to join. 🙂

As to my favourite opening, I'd have to say that the Bird (1.f4) opening is my cup of tea. Advantages include less theory to be learned than with more popular openings and taking the game into territory your opponent may not be familiar with. Also, the opening is fairly strong whereas the less popular openings go. The Bird leads to interesting games with plenty of potential for attack. Occasionally I play the Nimzowitsch-Larsen Attack (1.b3) for variation. As black I tend to play Caro-Kann against 1.e4 and am experimenting with a variety of things against 1.d4.

hey now, back off trying to recruit one of my white hats!!! I know i don't go recruiting people from other clans, with the exception of people complaining to me about their clan leader and how much they want in a real clan!

Pyrrho, I seriously considered joining you guys during your last big membership drive. The problem is the clan's stated preference for your opponents not to open with 1.e4 or 1.d4. I want my opponents to do that so I can stun them with 1...a6 or 1...b5 🙂
