i went away for a few days recently and left six games going most of which with a one day timeout and no timebank. i set myself to "on vacation" only to come back and find most of my opponents had claimed wins. some were fair enough as i was losing, but one was agianst "moonietx" and i was clearly not about to lose. i feel somehow cheated and unable to do anything.

I tend to not timeout games unless my opponents rating drops really extremely low. In that case I'll take the win and gain a small rating boost rather than risk losing and taking an artificial hard rating drop.
Your rating may not have dropped very far, but then again moonietx didn't exactly get a huge rating boost by timing you out either.
It's ok, just get over it. It's happened to me. I don't claim on vacation flags, within reason. If the guy goes away for a year, i get tired of looking at the skull and crossbones on my game list and just claim it, not because i need points that bad, it just looks untidy. If i guy time outs without a flag, i claim instantly. I don't send any warning. I think no matter how you arrange it, someone's going to get hurt. What i can't stand is those 28 day time banks. The games never end and you get sick of them. 7 days or less is plenty.
