You will need some ideas for the more closed variations.
Black usually doesn't let white get in e4.
1.f4 d5 2.Nf3 Nf6
You have to already decide on how to play.
You can play for the dark squares with e3, b3, Bb2, Bb5(after black plays c5 and Nc6), 0-0, Ne5, and maybe a pawn storm with g4. (After the Bb5 move you take the knight on c6 when provoked by a6.)
Another idea is to play for the white squares.
e3, Be2, 0-0, d3, and try to work in e4
or
3.g3, Bg2, 0-0, d3, and again work for e4
After e4 in these formations, you can try to work up a kingside attack.
3.e3, d4, Bd3, 0-0, Nbd2, and Ne5 is a stonewall. It works well WHEN black castles kingside. An idea is Rf3 and Rh3 or a pawn assault with g4.
These are just a few basic plans for the Bird.
