I don't think the standards at FICS are high. The play is terribly inconsistent. There are 1200s who exhibit an eye for tactics and a strong positional sense (and then lose on time), and there are 1800s that have trouble with the skill set I teach to third graders with scholastic ratings 600-800--for example, checkmate with lone queen or rook coordinating with his majesty.

Does anyone here play on the Free Internet Chess Server? (www.freechess.org). I'm finding the standard remarkably high, even people with ratings below 1200 are tough to beat!
To my knowledge computers are not allowed at FICS.
In fact, I have reported two computer users in the past (with analysis), and they have in fact been banned there.
A 1600 rated player is no stroll in the park (even for someone rated 2000). You have to look for tricky tactics, catch them, and then still play a really balanced endgame to carry the win home.
It is almost impossiple to win on technique alone.
You have to make it tricky. (Or at least I do.)
Premove is a must on that site.
(You put a piece on the square you want to before your opponent has made his move.)
Be sure type : set autoflag on.
That will call your opponents flag when he runs out of time, automatically.
There are a lot of rude players there (and at many sites).
+censor will remove them from your world entirely.
They can't talk to you or play you after you type that and their user name.
+noplay makes it so they can only not play you.

My opponent was only rated 1401, but he played a lot better than a typical 1400 on this site.

A reality check perhaps?
Originally posted by JieI've always been active at blitz, playing almost exclusively on playchess.com with the odd foray on this site. I've played just over a thousand online blitz games in the last year, so I'm not at all rusty.

were you black or white?
Originally posted by Fat Ladyplay the robatsch (1..g6, 2..Bg7, 3..c5) my good man! especially in blitz, loads of fun, or if you like, pirc/modern, it can transpose easily! there is just something about a fianchettoed (spelling???) bishop on g7 that's reassuring and awe inspiring, i dunno what it is, anyhow, i am in training at the moment, when i feel the time is right, im coming to get you and you will reside as a trophy on my mantelpiece, if i had one!😛

Pretty darn sure that computers are allowed, provided they declare themselves and register. They are the ones marked with a (C). Type "help computers" for details.
"Priority is given to those which are built from home grown code and operated by the programmer."
I play on FICS with the same username, just not very regularly.
I can live without premove, as Timeseal seems to make things work ok, but then I never play lightning, and almost always play either "5 5" or "2 12", which is enough time for me for blitz.
I just find that I burn out and stop playing good moves after two or three blitz games, so I don't play for very long on any given night, and most of the time I get enough long games at my local club.
