Does anyone here play on the Free Internet Chess Server? (www.freechess.org). I'm finding the standard remarkably high, even people with ratings below 1200 are tough to beat!

I'm serious! I'm having to work really hard to beat the players there, and I haven't played anyone over 1800 yet. I've lost 4 out of 19, and one of those was a real drubbing from a 1663 player.

Yeah, the standard is pretty high, though people with ratings below 1200 aren't so hard usually..

What is more interesting is the median. While out of 20000 RHP users you have to just know how pieces move and some ideas and you are already ranked 10000th, to arrive at fics median (1350 rating) you have to play already pretty decently and player who is in the middle of RHP rating standard is very low there (for example 18000th out of 20000 )

Well, my FICS rating is quite a bit lower than my RHP rating, but maybe that's just because I'm bad (worse) at blitz.

1 Is FICS just Blitz?

2 How do you improve at Blitz? I played for a bit here and then stopped as I had a couple of opponents who were just obnoxious. I'm trying to improve my CC and cut out the mistakes and tried Blitz again here and tied myself in knots. It was appalling.

I enjoy the quick games but I'm not keen on spending my time getting told to go and @*7K myself, if you know what I mean.

the scoundrels! bringing the royal game into disrepute! sadly gone are the days when one might swipe them across the face with ones glove and challenge them to a duel at dawn for their scurrilous remarks, for there is no excuse for lack of civility!

My opponent was only rated 1401, but he played a lot better than a typical 1400 on this site.

Yes, I noticed it as well. My blitz rating (and I play 10 mins game, not a too fast like 5 or 3 mins) is 1100 - 1200s!

My FICS blitz rating is 1000-1100, but I'm pretty happy with that. I've beaten a 1700, but was really happy to get beat by a 2000!

I think Standard Ratings are a bit more comparable to ratings around here. My FICS standared and my RHP rating are close to being the same. My FICS blitz rating is usually 200 points or so lower. I play 10 0 games.
