Technology has ruined chess,like in so many other games and sports.I used to like pub quizzes before google.People just cheat now."I'm just going outside for a smoke" Yeah right!
The only way to test a players true ability is to do away with all the backroom staff,seconds,internet and engines and let the opponents play the games in isolation somewhere.You could still have a big board so people could watch online,but that would be it.
