making GM isn't worth having no car and looking like that imo (such a receding hairline and he's only in his 30s?!)

Yes, being good at chess is fun, but so is having an actual career/life 😉

Chess should be a hobby, not a profession, unless you're a natural

1990 buick century been crapping out on me. i've taken to riding a bike for excercise and transportation. riding a lot has its benefits of cardio. just because he is 30 and balding does not mean its from chess. stress may cause it though. i'm sure hes more focused on chess than getting laid if hes riding a bike and playing chess for a living dont u say? thats damn good dedication.

He took 10 years, from age 24 to 34 to become a GM. Good for him. He was unemployed and rode a bicycle to get around. Unmarried, no kids, no life beyond chess. That's not so good.
That's weird.

Jesse came to Oxford, where I live, for a few years when he was a student. My club had a pretty good team then with Harriet and Adam Hunt, Simon Ansell and Jesse all members. Unfortunately the talent was split equally amongst our top two teams as they were both in the first division.

Jesse had very long hair in those days and was a demon at blitz chess. Although clearly a very talented player and a really nice guy I didn't think he'd ever become a GM. I thought Adam Hunt had a good chance, but he hasn't quite got there yet.

I don't know if anyone has seen American History X but there's a great quote in there that Sweeney asks Derek, "Has anything you've done made your life better?" I think this quote can be applied to individual activities such as Chess. I get a lot of satisfaction out of improving... if you don't, you shouldn't be playing at all.

If FIDE would get their act together Kraai would have been the 2nd American born GM in 10 years.
