I think SCID is probably the best you could get for free. However, you could also use websites like Shredderchess.com.

I actually do use Shredderchess.com, but feel a bit guilty about opening several tabs every time I play. I have now downloaded SCID, Chessbase Light and Chess Assistant (as well as Crafty). Might as well give them all a try. 😀

I really like Bookup 2000, eventually you have to pay for it... buts it a nice database program
