There's nothing wrong with Winboard engines, but they take a little more configuring than UCI engines. If you'd prefer to avoid the configuring, you can download the Arena GUI, which supports both UCI and Winboard engines. (I prefer the stable version 1.1 instead of the beta versions.)
Just go to the Arena Downloads link and download the Arena 1.1 Setup 1 file (comes with the SOS 5.1 engine, which isn't bad.) Then you can also download other free UCI engines to add them to the Arena GUI. A couple of strong ones are Toga II 1.2.1 and Spike 1.2 Turin.

Originally posted by KaworukunI hope I'm not misunderstanding you, but if you download the Arena 1.1 Setup 1 file that I mentioned previously, I believe that the SOS 5.1 engine is included with the Arena GUI program. You may have to activate the engine through the Arena menu, but it shouldn't be that difficult.
Is there any engines that you can just download with one programe?
Here's a nice strength comparison between several free chess engines:
http://home.fnal.gov/~annis/chess/
Crafty 20.1 (~2526; comparable to Crafty 19.3)
Glaurung 1.02 (~2673)
Fruit 2.1 (~2754; also the base package of Gambit Fruit and Toga II)
Gambit Fruit 1.0 Beta 4bx (~2790)
Toga II (~2810)
I tend to use Gambit Fruit myself, in conjunction with SCID.

I dont own a computer at home. So therefore I dont get to use fritz. Does anyone know where I can find the best free chess engine. I wouldnt mind looking at some of my finished games.
Cheers.
I'm available for $9.95/game USD + $2.25 USD shipping and handling (of handwritten analysis).
I know a GM in real life mate. He gives me advice for free if I really want it. Nice try though lol. Also programes find things he misses. He told me a position was drawn from one of my club games. I disagreed I felt I was winning, but didnt know how. Shredder 7 found a win for me.
Also I am a cheapskate no way I am paying anyone to look at my games.
It had been a while since I'd installed Arena 1.1, so to refresh my memory, I reinstalled it. I just downloaded the Arena 1.1 Setup 1 file, installed it, and it was ready to go immediately with the SOS 5.1 engine. No configuring necessary.
SOS 5.1 isn't among the strongest engines, but it's not bad (somewhere around 2650 or so). If you want to download and install stronger engines, you can, but it sounds to me like you'd be satisfied with the SOS engine.
