What is this? Is it a theme I should know and study? Anybody care to show a game with it and walk us all through the strategy of it?

no clue but I'm guessing it has no special reference other than, by it's nature, the french opening is an outpost pawn.

No, I overheard some people talking about it and it has something to do with a knight.

From the Exeter chess club website:

"The point immediately in front of an isolated pawn is a great outpost for a Knight." (in the French Defence)

could be a possibility for what they were talking about.

White aims to get a knight on d4 in the French. Maybe that's it.

yes, you are right...and if the position imbalance will be the light squares black bishop against that d4 white Knight, black is doomed...

Off the top of my head i believe it's anytime you can plant a knight in one of the central squares and he cannot be chased off by a pawn move, only by an exchange.

I've played the advanced French since '77 the French outpost
is the square d6. Get a Knight safely on d6 and it's a huge piece.

I checked my DB and 8 times I have sunk a Knight on d6 and 8 wins.

Sometimes you have to be a bit crafty to reach d6 with a Knight.

Look at this position. Plan - get Knight to d6.

The solution is in this game - I was White.

Those cliffhangers are the most satisfying ones to win for sure! Great game! I would probably taken the pawn, let him get a queen and THEN mate himπŸ™‚ I Usually get in deep doo doo when I find out I passed on a nice simple one move mate and he has a great defense and THEN gets the queenπŸ™‚
