I could not sleep well the other night as Fritz 10 (single processor) took a thumping in the Playchess engine room losing about 70 points from 2520. How can I stop this slide? Even some unknown upstart named loop “ate” my baby.

Whilst I can assume that there have been increases in multi-processor systems/dual cores, without buying new hardware how can I claw back some points? On the subject of Fritz 10 are there any updates other than the gui one?

The engine room in PlayChess is for engines and as I let Fritz play unattended I assume they were engines. When playing in the engine room I bar centaurs and laggers.

Laggers are a new feature in F10 to describe those with non-broadband connections/lag on their connection as that can gain extra time.

I assume you have a full compliment of endgame tablebases and a well-tuned opening tree.

I played Fritz 10 against my dual processor Deep Junior 10 and it lost both games

It is possible to lag with broadband, and to avoid it with dial-up. It is not the speed of your connection, but the traffic relative to capabilities. A cable company that over-subscribes can be plagued by lag. Information regarding lag has been built into the playchess interface (ping) for some time, but it seems they have improved their reporting.
