I'm happy about winning this game Game 2908083. Maybe it's not too exciting to anyone else, but I'm happy because me opponent played well-- didn't blunder or make any huge errors.

I didn't know until after that it's a Giuoco Piano... doesn't seem very strong for white generally...

Thanks, it didn't even occur to me until I realized that White's kingside attack would not be fatal.

I checked it with an engine, the assessment bounced around a bit, but it confirms that there weren't any major oversights and that the sacrifice works. Well played.

Deep thought,
Thanks for your comments. Did your engine have any comments about 25 Kh1? It seems like a wasted move to me, and believe me, I know a lot about wasted moves.

Great game! Ruthless, just the way I like it.

I suggestion though. I think you should have tried the Nf8, Ne6, Nd4 idea earlier, or other move variations to get the knight onto the d4 outpost.

Really good game 🙂

nice game. I spent some time trying to figure out why Kh8, and came to the conclusion that you were gaining power for a kingside attack starting with g6.

Turns out I was wrong, but black ends up with a nicely fortified position in the corner even with the threats. Well played. I would've probably missed that, and played Nf6 to free up a file and gain a larger slice of center. Might not have survived that attack though. g6 doesn't look awful either. soo, just curious, why Kh8?

Rahim,
Thanks. I was ruthless but, honestly, I was pretty scared until move 31.

To answer your question... I don't think I could have moved the knight any earlier... I was too busy promoting and harrassing and getting white's king in place.

allostery,
Thanks!

Why Kh8? Well, I was wondering the same thing later when I moved the king again to g7. I was mostly concerned with moving the rook over, I didn't put too much thought into the corect square for the king...Maybe I was already thinking about grabbing the b3 pawn with my queen worried that, if my king were on g7, white could put its queen on f5. Probably a lot of worrying for nothing.

Do you think Kg7 would have been better? Would the game have been the same?

Don't underestimate the Giuoco Piano .. for instance, what would you have played if rather than 11. Qd1 white played 11. Qg3?

idioms,
Although 11. Qg3 looks bad for black at first glance, I think 11... b5 is a good reply. It takes the bishop out and takes most of the sting out of white's attack.

After
11. Qf3 b5
12. Bxb5 ??? (Bb4 maybe best)
13. Bxh6

Black has to play very accurately to maintain equality and i would much rather be on the white side of the board 😉

I assume you meant 11. Qg3. How about the following replies?

11. Qg3 b5
12. Bxb5 Nxb5
13. Bxh6 Nh5
14. Qg4 Nxc3

Without the bishop and knight, white has no attack and black's ok.

I do agree with you though... there is no margin for error and I probably would not be able to pull this off OTB. And my original opinion of Guiocco Piano was hasty.

With black's king on h7, any threat on f5 (like the N that was there then) could be met with g6. I think if I'd seen the need to move my king, I probably would have put it on h7. I see why you did it, though. When I have a move in mind (Qxb3) I only think of ways to make it happen. White spends way too many moves + energy after that to move in on the kingside attack. Perhaps (BIG perhaps) white should have made more productive moves than Re3?? after you moved your queen out of protect mode

The subsequent move to h7 is also confusing to me. why make that move when you've already lined up your rook? I'm sure there is good theory behind it, but I don't really understand.
