We have a fancy new shopping district in town. They have a giant chess set (3 foot pieces) out in the open that people can play with. I saw the guy setting the pieces out, he obviously didn't know or didn't care about the correct starting position. It was like this -

  • 8
  • a
  • 7
  • b
  • 6
  • c
  • 5
  • d
  • 4
  • e
  • 3
  • f
  • 2
  • g
  • 1
  • h

I was going to put them in the right place, but then I noticed the bigger problem.

I call white.

I don't think you will get in many checks then...

But without a king, haven't you lost?

Without a king I can't be checkmated. It is of course a illegal position.

Somewhere in another city, there's a mall with two white kings. 😞

In the Baltic at Newcastle they have a giant marble chess set. All the pieces and squares are white.

At first I was thinking fisher random minus the "castleable" rule.

Then... yeah... white.

A fake beard and an old hat on one of the white queens... problem solved!

so since white has no king does white loose by default since he/she has lost the king?? or have they won since they can't be checkmated?

It's not a problem, it's just a modern, politically correct chess set that acknowledges the possibility and validity of homosexual royal marriage.

It goes much farther than that. Not only is it acknowledging a possible homosexual royal marriage but it also supports adoption for said couple.
Usually you teach the kids about the king and queen and their little pawns. In this case you learn about the 2 queens and the adopted pawns.
One pawn might wonder why it has no father, yet a pawn in a different mall now has two dads, and is wondering where mommy fits in.

It's a variation on the birds and bees, but we use chess sets instead and include the possibility of gay marriages and adoption in said marriages. Complicated times we're in.

And you can see that the bishops are all confined to the dark squares, and thus are kept separate from the workings of the state, as it should be.

I know what the Bird is (and play it), but what's the Bee opening?
