A few times after I played this opening, I get trapped when I castle and always end up in checkmate whenever I'm playing someone fairly experienced. What can I do to avoid this problem?

Could you post a few game links?

I'm checkmated many times when I play someone fairly experienced and I don't even play the Gioco Piano!

All is not as it seems. the "quiet game" often ends up being a wild and noisy ride. been there, done that.

I don't see any traps in the position you described, but it's so early in the game that your problem isn't apparent. I imagine you're having problems with Black moving Nf6, Ng4 and then the Queen coming diagonally to the Kingside?

The only thing I can say is that the Bishop on c4 is very aggressively aiming at your f2 square, so you should expect an attempt at a Kingside attack.

The name mean "quiet game" comes from a time when the super blood thirsty lines of chess were still common practice. Giuoco Piano although often a position struggle can explode into all out mayhem right from the start.

If you're getting mated all the time, it shouldnt be to hard to find out why, post some of the game links here or look at GM games and see what they do different :-)

I assume you're playing the white side?4.0-0 is not such a good move,4.c3 is much better,IMO :-}

try the evans gambit:
1.e4 e5
2.nf3 nc6
3.bc4 bc5
4.b4

leads to sharp tactical games.

In my opinion avoid anything involving Italian lines, many masters do and stay away from it, just because there are alotta traps and sharp lines that lead to games where you can find yourself unfamiliar and playing based on skill, and if your playing a 2400+ FIDE rated elo, well your going to most of the time get destroyed, therefore, i say just dont play the intalian opening, go for more sound variations with the Ruy Lopez, which is a stronger opening for white and can be mastered without learning 100 different trapping possibilites??? The italian is very complicated!!!!

Dustin Rogers

Hope this helps!

Which is quite ironic, considering beginners are usually told to start with the Italian Game. 🙂

yeah play the Evans, it kicks ass. Morphy used to play it a piece down and still win

Sure - if you're Paul Morphy reincarnate.
