I'm a new player (the only thing i knew about chess was how the pieces moved until last month) and I'm looking for your reccomendation on 1 or 2 openings for black. I'm fairly comfortable with the opening i've been using with white and have been having good success with it (against weaker players of course).

I'm looking for something that:

1) is versitile - can be used against a variety of white openings (this is important because i don't know many openings haha)

2) something that a begginer can get the hang of (for example, i've obviously heard good things baout the sicilian but i've also heard that you need a tremendous amount of knowledge to play it well, so i haven't given it a try)

I've heard good things about the Botvinnik but haven't found any good web resources to help me learn it - so if you happen to know of some that would be helpful as well.

Thanks for your advice 🙂

Maybe u do need a lot of knowledge/theory at GM level. I've learned of the basic first few moves of the sicilian, and I really enjoy the games, and win quite a few... without knowing any theory. If you're only starting off I recommend at least trying the sicilian against e4, and have a look into the nimzo indian against d4.

If you are totaly new something everyone should recomend is e5 against e4 and I agree, it´s good for beginers. But for average players I would say: "The Sicilian". It has alot of attacking games and complex position good for improving.

Against d4 maybe you should try somehing easy first. The nimzo and the Qindinan (wich you have to know to play the Nimzo) is very complexed.
Maybe the Qgambit defered (right letterz??) Wich leeds to less sharp positions but still full of options.

Against e4: Scandinavian

Against d4: Slav Def.

a. e4, e5

1. d4, d5

1. c4, c5

that covers the three most common openings for white. Just make the rest up. Remember to try and occupy the center with pawns/knights. Bishops can be good up close or far away, so adjust as the situation calls for.... Develop quickly and castle.

EDIT; just looked and if you stay at the p.1500+ get an opening encyclopedia, find a blitz site and start trying things out. I personally play the french, benko and nimzo as black but the najdorf and schivisnikov variations of the sicillian are fun too.

I disagree about e4 e5. I hear so many people telling beginners that they should play that. But it means you're playing into what your opponent is comfortable with, and that's not good for sucess (and therefore positive encouragement). Also, I don't believe it helps tactically anymore than any other reasonably open opening. Also, too many beginners in my opinion, having been encouraged to play tactically, lack any strategical ability, without which a chess game cannot be played. Plus, it's easy to develop tactical skill at any time; but strategy is a slow, steady development, and should therefore be practiced as soon as someone starts playing.

There's nothing wrong with e4 e5, and it's not a bad choice. I just don't think it's necessarily a better choice than any other opening. I think it's much better to let a player experiment and find what they're comfortable with rather than telling them what to do.

If you JUST started playing, then I would recommend NOT playing the Sicilian. The lines just tend to be too sharp in the open sicilian and a brand new player is so liable to mess up and die in those positions.

Honestly, 1. e4 e5 and 1. d4 d5 are just fine for black (openings like the KID and Sicilian-Dragon are way more fun IMO but e5 seems easier.)

after 1. e4 e5, white (if he knows what he's doing) will almost always play 2. Nf3. Black's main choices are 2. ...Nc6, 2. ...d6 (philidor's defense), and 2. Nf6 (petroff defense). The latter 2 can be studied on their own. With 2. Nc6, white's main choices are 3. Bb5 (the Ruy Lopez and most popular choice IMO) 3. Bc4 (Giouco Piano), 3. Nf3 (hoping for the Four Knights Game) 4. d4 (the scotch game). The Ruy Lopez does take studying but black should do fine with the main lines in the Giouco and Four Knights.

1. d4 d5 and 99% of the time it's 2. c4. I suggest the queen's gambit declined with 2. ...e6 (it seems less complicated then the slav and less risky than the accepted) and looking over its lines.
