I was playing this game on Fics tonight. I was white here. I am threating mate on the bank rank and his queen with my bishop. I'm up the exchange and a bishop and will win an endgame. Black had 15 minutes on his clock and spent 20 seconds before he played Qd6, allowing me to exchange queens and take all the pressure off of my king. he resigned 1 move later. I was astonished when i looked after the game and saw he had mate. I know the winning move is hard to see, very hard, and seeing that he had a mate(in 10, mind you), he would never see, but why give up. Only 20 seconds? I just can't understand how you could only spend 20 seconds.
It takes just four moves to see that Black should win (and I wouldn't go looking for mate in ten if I can easily get large enough material advantage here). White is forced to sacrifice the queen and the knight after: 1...Ra3+ 2.bxa Qc3+ 3.Ka4 Bd7+ 4.Qxd7 Nxd7 and since Black threatens 5...Qxa3+ and 6...c6# Now White has to play 5.Ne5 (all else quickly leads to mate in few moves, e.g. [ 5.axb Nb6+ 6.Ka5 Qa3+ 7.Kb5 Qa6+ 8.Kc5 Qxc4 # ]). Now if you want to get pedantic the mate in question is this one I guess: 5...Nb6+ 6.Kb5 Qxe5+ 7. c5 Qe2+ 8.Ka5 Qa6+ 9.Kxb4 Qc4+ 10.Ka5 Qa4 #.

Ra3 Kxb4 at least makes the opponent think for mate. letting the queen get in there will be mate faster or at least allow your opponent to use less time to think of a move. when in a timed game i often make weird sacrafices when we are both low on time. they get too cought up thinking about the sacrafice their time often runs out.
