I don't know the guy, but his most recent tournament appearance was in the 2008 World Open in Philadelphia, according to USCF information.
I knew Glenn Umstead when he was an expert (US ELO 2100) back in my home state of Virginia in the late 80's and early 90's. I was a lowly 1300-1400 player just starting out in tournaments when I was in College, and he was just a really nice guy. He would play anyone at the club, and really loved to play speed chess. I haven't seen him in years, and I would love to hear good news about him myself.
I played him once. It was the last round of the 1993 National Chess Congress, Under 2200 Section. Prior to the game, we each had a score of 3.5-1.5. He won the game and his score of 4.5-1.5 was good enough to finish in the cash. We analyzed the game afterwards and I do not recall him being particularly friendly or unfriendly.
I just looked up his rating on the USCF website.
Regular = 2068 Quick = 2114
