I had assumed that, given David Howell's current strong performance in the Howard Staunton tournament (www.howardstaunton.com/hsmt2005/latestscores.shtml) that he would be ensured of becoming the UK's youngest GM.
However, according to Raymond Keene, he will need to get 3 wins and a draw from his remaining 4 games to achieve this.
Does anyone know a resource which provides a definitive explanation of how GM status is gained. I think this has been asked a number of times before (apologies if the case) but most of the time the stuff I have read simply mutters on about "norms" without actually explaining why a character from Cheers is relevant.
Yes, I know that's a bad joke, but I thought I would get it in before anyone else.

points are available, do that three times and maintain a 2500 rating.
Piece of cake....
International Masters have the same thing, except its 50% and
I think 2400 rating.
So if there are 10 points available, you need to score 7 1/2 for GM
and 5 for IM and do that three times plus the rating requirement.
If Howell has to actually make 3 1/2 out of the next 4 points to
get to 75% it doesn't sound like he turned in a terribly strong
performance in that particular tourny.
I don't know how many points are available but suppose its 12.
a 75% means he needs 9 points so if he is off by 3 1/2 at the
3/4 stage then he would only have made 5 1/2 at the time of the
comments. I guess thats not exactly a bad performance, only 1/2
point from IM status, so for the IM title (which he probably already
has) then he would only need one more draw out of the next
4 games to get an IM norm. It also depends on the average rating
of the participants. If everyone there were 2300 players it might not
even count if you win with 100 %. Not too sure about that one though.
