David Tebb is not a Grand Master, although despite that I think that he's a player we all respect. Most very strong OTB players aren't that great at correspondence chess, and vice versa. I think that it's more in the 1400 - 1800 band that you get real synergy.

David Tebb isn't a GM. He isn't even an IM. However he is still one of the best non-engine players on this site.

It isn't until you get to a pretty high level that you realise how strong an International Master is. I've played several IMs and it's worse than playing a strong engine, at least an engine will play logical moves - an IM will realise when they have a worse position and quickly drag you into a deep tactical guagmire and drown you there.

I just looked at the ICCF top 200 list and only recognized a handful of names. Andersson, Berliner, Umansky, Gaprindashvili.

last summer i was in a tournament and i was waiting for people to show up. i asked the tournament director if he'd like to play a game. i knew he would kill me but it would be nice to watch how he played an opening against me. he turned me down and i had seen him around in tournaements hes been playing chess probably for 40 years and i know hes an IM maybe even a GM but i didn't get a chance to play him. 🙁

"Play correspondence chess!" - Boris Spassky on being asked how to improve

"I often had as many as 150 [correspondence] games in progress. [It] had the useful effect of deepening my theoretical knowledge and giving me an insight into all aspects of the game. Later on this proved of great value to me in tournament play." - Paul Keres

"Correspondence chess and over-the-board chess complement each other." - Alexander Alekhine

But . . . I think nowadays it's different for top players, due to computers. Theory moves too fast, and there's a 2700 opponent on your PC to practice with.

RHP's #3 player has drawn the current ICCF #1 and agreed to draw against a World Champion despite being pawn up in CC.

Correspondence chess does not appeal to professional chess players because of

- it takes too long to finish a tournament
- there are no prizes like in top level chess
- ICCF allows engines or is silent on them meaning those players produce computerised results. I wonder how many ICCF titles Fritz has won with no credit to Franz Morsch?

On the likes of PlayChess/ICC you can regularly see players such as Short, Adams, Kamsky, Nakamura etc

Sites like this one which bar engines appeal to club-level/strong amateurs who want to try out new openings etc.

none. they use engines for blunder checking, not for selecting moves.

Look at http://amici.iccf.com/issues/issue_05/issue_05_Chess_engines.html where a CC GM notices that his opponent is using Fritz 8 and decides to "trap" him.

Such blatant outside help should be reported to the ICCF except that the ICCF allows such abuse Do you think any OTB GM would like to join such a "circus"?

if they don't like cc, they obviously shouldn't take part. I can see no problem.
