- Spend more time on my games! Actually use the analysis for at least 5 moves in.
- Consistantly play at around a 1600 level, perhaps 1650.
- Try to take my games slower, limit myself to 40-50 games, try to get 20ish.
- Learn my openings better.
- Look into some end games, figure out what I can improve on them.
- Use slower time controls, and never do a HC tournament again.
- Play with some stronger players, see what they do, and learn.
These are my goals for the end of 2008 🙂, are they reasonable? Can you guys tell me what you think about it? Tell me if it's even possible?
Thanks!!

a while ago there was a thread about how deep people look, and I think caissad4 was the only stronger player that looked deep as a rule.
My goal of being 1700+ is closer now that I am a sub, I think that by December 2008 if god is willing i will reach it.
Also I have been analyzing into 4 or 5 moves deep in every game since i`m a sub, in some games I force myself to analyze without the analysis board to use my brain, I noticed that this way the games are won faster most times.
Good luck with your goals.

So what do you recommend?
The truth is, this is situational. In more straightforward postions 2-3 moves is as much as a lot of people need. When there are really complicated tactics, you need to analyze more. In some endings, even 10 moves might not be enough.
Trying to take some extra time each move to make sure your not blundering is a good idea too. 5-6 moves of analysis doesn't help if your first move drops your queen.

I don't know where you are in endgame skill, but my advice is learn the basics (more or less in order K+P vs. K, K+P vs. K+ N,B, R or Q, spend a lot of time on K+2P Vs. K+P, then K+N+2P vs. K+N+P, etc) when your bored with that, skip to the part of the endgame book that has position with many pawns and play through these, just to get an idea of how they go.
These are almost identical to my goals, and I think my goals are worthwhile and doable.
My two questions would be almost rhetorical because they are intended to have you think about what it would take to reach these goals: 1) How do you intend to learn your openings better (I'm assuming that you mean you want to play better in your openings), and 2) What will you do to improve your endgame play?
Originally posted by range blastsI think those goals are too general, you need to be more specific. I mean, consistantly playing around 1600 level is not a very precise goal.

you have skipped the most important aspect of chess training: tactical study.
Maybe you should take your first point (spending more time on games - ignore the depth of analysis as this will be dictated by the requirements of the position and spending more time is quite likely to involve deeper analysis anyway)... then when you have achieved this to the point that it becomes how you normally play - then set yourself another specific goal.
This would not exclude the possibility that you will do elements towards the other goals...but it will set your priority.
I know from experience that it is easy to set a lot of sensible looking targets only to find they evaporate and come to nothing. There is even some expression that goes something like: "the road to damnation is paved with good intentions"
It is the goals you realise that make the difference...and boost your confidence to realise more goals...so good luck...maybe click on the thread around Christmas time and let us know how you got on!
