you could try setting up a board at home. and think about what your opponent might do in response to your move.

Agreed, you need to start from scratch.
Try to learn in this order (wish I did)

1) all the moves & rules
2) basic endgame strategy
3) tactics
4) openings
5) strategy
6) get a repertoire & stick to what suits you
7) good luck!

Well it looks like you are pretty much a beginner. Chess is a very complex game at all levels, but it makes more and more sense as you go on.

Basically, right now you should read all the general information you can. Like go on wikipedia and look at chess, chess tactics, chess openings, the endgame etc.... You need to learn the gist of the game.

Buy a chess program if you can afford one. I did a bunch of tutorials in Chessmaster 9000 and it helped my game immensely.

Right now you need a foothold into the game, and all you need to do is learn the basics.

I suggest Chessmaster 10th Edition, it's only around $20 and you can listen to Josh Waitzkin teach you basic chess

you can buy CM 10th at Best Buy

I would recommend all of the books in this series. Back when they were on Microsoft press I managed to pick up the whole series for under $20. I wish I still had them.
