I do not play but have been looking at the Grunfeld a little bit. It seems like the vast majority of material refers to 3. Nc3, but what if white plays 3. Nf3? Do most top level players then try to go into the KID, or some other opening? Is it still possible to play the Grunfeld? In MCO-14 there are many pages dedicated to 3. NC3, but only two columns dedicated to 3.NF3, and likewise for ECO codes and so on. Does it just transpose back?

It doesn't have to transpose back, and that's called the Neo-Grunfeld and can be a bit annoying for Black because it doesn't have that dynamic feel to it that the Nc3 Grun does. If Black wants to avoid the Neo-Grunfeld, then transposing to the KID is probably the easist option in terms of getting the structure one wants, but difficult in terms that one has to know both the Grunfeld and the KID.

Does anyone out there play the Grunfeld but not the KID?

After 3. Nf3 black could also play 3... c5 and head for a Benoni instead of a KID. By the way, Nimzo-Indian and Budapest Gambit players also face the same dilemna of what to do when white plays 3. Nf3.

I play the Grunfeld quite regularly now. It's easiest to just delay the decision a move with 3..Bg7. Then 4. Nc3 d5 is just a normal Grunfeld again.

I don't normally play the Grünfeld but do occasionally play the Neo-Grünfeld through transposition. It seems a perfectly OK opening for black.

In my beloved Buda, the "normal" responses to 3 Nf3 are either exd4 or e4. Exd4 seems to be more in line with the basic idea of opening the game up early.

Yeah I'm not sure what I was thinking when I posted that since 3. Nf6 isn't really a problem in the Budapest Gambit.
