Hey guys, I don't know if you remember me at all but you guys pointed me towards some good chess books before. Thanks alot for all your ideas, i've decided to go with the winning chess series and the how to beat your dad series for recognition. Anyways i figured since you guys helped me so much with that, you might be able to help me figure out how i could have won, or at least made better moves during this game.

I've gone thru it a few times and asside from 7. a3 and 20. Ne5 i wasnt sure of any better moves. If you could i would appreciate some help on evaluating this game. Was there any great moves i missed? Could I have won? Did i have the advantage at any moment in the game? And how could i have played more agressively? Thanks for your time guys. Any ideas are very much appreciated

Don't worry. I have lost numerous matches under ten moves (sigh...), 25 is not that bad!

I have taken a short look at your opening and commented It from the point of theori. In the rest of the game I only pointed out moves that seems real mistakes to me.... It might sound harsh but I mean it 😉

5. Bb5+ isn't a move in the Scandinavian since black wants to place his pawns on c6 and e6 to secure the all important d5 square. The Bishop belongs on c4 where it aims at some weak points around the black king.

With that in mind 5..Bd7 isn't a move either. c6 was called for. Now you should go with Bc4 and no harm is done as the Bishop on d7 has to move again to get outside the pawn chain and make room for a knight. The difference might be that it can now go to c6. But with the bischop on c6 the idea of c4-d5 pawn break through increases in strengh.

So 6 Qe2 is also not good and 6...e7 is a terrible move. Now Bc4 must be wery good.

7.Bd2 well ok, but Bc4 must still be much stronger.

a4? Why? It only covers the bishop. I don't get it. Move that bloody bishop now 😀

13...f5 is also an ugly move giving you free presure against the weak e6 pawn and the nice square e5. You must be better here.

18.Nc7? Why? he just moves his rock and then you have to go away again. You have an undeveloped rock on h1. Get it in to action. Most likely it belongs on d1 from where it eyes e6 and allows your other rock to enter the game through e1. At the same time you get f1 for your King without shouting the rock out of the game.

20.Nxa7 I dislike this pawngrapping. With his last moves black got all his pices into play and you are still underdeveloped. But that said I find it hard to find anything good. Perhaps 20.Nbd4 that stops black from entering your position for the moment.

b4. again an ugly move. If say he didn't have the tactics with Rd3 he would stil be at least close to winning because you allow him to exchange knights. Your active Knight against his vournable knight and at the same time you spoil your pawn structure and he wins his pawn back. Rxa7 bxc5 is a terrible position for white because of all the weak pawns.

I Hope it helps. Good luck with your study of the game.

Not much creative criticism here, except for Kaoslos' who beat me to it 🙂
I'll give my short analyses anyway.

5.Bb5 is not so great. Not that it's a losing move or anything,I just don't see the point.
Your bishop will be unhappy on that square, and if you trade, after 5...,Bd7,you would help
black develop since he can recapture with the knight.I think that bishop belongs on d3,or maybe c4.
Instead,I'd say develop the knight to f3 and wait what black does.

7.Bd2 is an ok move,I don't think 7.a3 is any better. Why do you think it is better?

14.c3 nothing wrong with that, but I would prefer Ne5,putting the knight on that nice outpost
Or else activate one of your rooks,to Rac1 or Rfd1.Seems ok to me.

16.dxc5 I don't like that capture.Can't really explain why,just doesn't 'feel' right.I think I would go for Ne5 again,even though it means you'll have an isolated pawn on d4.

18.Nc7? Wasting a move on a harmless attack.I'd say it's high time you activate those rooks.
Remember, you need your whole army to win a game!

21.b4? Decisive mistake.Instead just Nb5 giving back the pawn if black wants it.

24.bxc5? You could have avoided the mate with Kf1,but it would still have cost you a knight.

Pretty much in line with Kaoslos' view,I think. That bishop on b5 troubled you throughout the entire game, well, until it was removed anyway. And in the end you missed the tactics your oppo had.

Now I must run, already late for work
😉

Thanks so much for the help guys. As for 7.a3 i just figured it was the best way to prevent the doubling on the diaganol. Appreciate it!
