However in this game the 1850 player has only 39 in progress against a 1050 player so I can't understand how in a tight game they would not ensure that they don't lose to a 1050. It has been pointed out that statistically it would be less than 0.0135% chance of 1850 beating a 1050 player
The game started on December 14th and ended December 19th; obviously both players were moving quickly. The higher rated player blundered; it happens. While there's a low chance of an 1850 losing to a 1050, there's not a zero chance.

EDIT: The higher rated player has made 638 moves this month which is a pretty high number for that rating esp. with only 39 ongoing games.

Not all players are paying attention. Two maybe three times I played 2. .... e5 after 1. d4 d5 2. e3 . Every time I did this I thought that I was playing White. The last time I did this I was watching the Olympics. I did not even notice that I was playing Black. Sometimes a player may have just played a blunder.

Kramnik had only one game in progress when he missed a mate in one.

I notice that elamef has played about 8400 total games since joining a little less than 2 years ago. That is a LOT of chess. That's an average of more than 10 games completed per day, every day for 2 years. Yikes!!

That's a LOT of games to be focusing on at the same time. I suspect elamef's rating would be higher if he/she played fewer games.

There are so many factors involved that it's hard to tell. I'm locked in 2 tough games against an opponent who was rated about 600 points lower than I was when the games started and both games could go either way.

My opponent had a huge dip in his rating when he resigned a ton of games in one day a few months ago, so you have to look for things like that also.

In this case she hovers 950 - 1050 so no huge rating drop (does always have a high gameload)
The opponent has had a meteoric rise though
