8. I got a chess set as a birthday gift. My dad taught me how to play, but I positively sucked till I was about 13.

It was about 7 or 8 for me and we had no idea. After setting up we'd then move our pieces into a formation before starting to take.

At 12 in my first year at high school I took on the captain of the chess team one lunchtime and completely wiped him. I still remember the look on his face of disgust (at himself) and embarassment! Never underestimate your opponent, which is a lesson I'm re-learning in one of my current games.

Yeah, even the smartest man that ever lived on the planet (William James Sidis) could only say word "Door" when he was 6 month old.

I was about 8 years old when I learned to play it. My dad helped me at first, and I used a chessbook for complete noobs then. 😛

My mother and I got out my older brother's old chess set, read the instructions, and began playing when I was about thirteen years of age.

Einstein never spoke until he was about four. Allegedly, he had no reason to.

I never heard of chess making anyone older.

I was 10. For my 10th birthday my parents bought me one of those all in one game set. It included; chess, checkers, chineese checkers, horse racing, etc.

No one in my family knew how to play, so I learned the rules from the instructions included and proceeded to learn the basics. I got into more chess playing in grade school and played all through high school. I stopped playing after high school and really never picked it up again until a couple years ago (24 years later). Here I am.

My Dad taught me when I was about 5 or 6...that was a long, long time ago...

What I thought was cool was, when I was in 6th Grade, our Math Teacher made all of the kids in class learn how to play chess, and we had tournaments all year long... I taught a few kids how to play, and that was kind of neat...

I was a good player as a kid, but now I realize how much I don't know about the game... but it's fun learning new things about Chess all the time... this certainly can be a lifetime hobby, and I hope it is with me.

No, it is now believed that it wasn't 'door', it was 'duh'. 🙂
