It was about 7 or 8 for me and we had no idea. After setting up we'd then move our pieces into a formation before starting to take.
At 12 in my first year at high school I took on the captain of the chess team one lunchtime and completely wiped him. I still remember the look on his face of disgust (at himself) and embarassment! Never underestimate your opponent, which is a lesson I'm re-learning in one of my current games.
I was 10. For my 10th birthday my parents bought me one of those all in one game set. It included; chess, checkers, chineese checkers, horse racing, etc.
No one in my family knew how to play, so I learned the rules from the instructions included and proceeded to learn the basics. I got into more chess playing in grade school and played all through high school. I stopped playing after high school and really never picked it up again until a couple years ago (24 years later). Here I am.

My Dad taught me when I was about 5 or 6...that was a long, long time ago...
What I thought was cool was, when I was in 6th Grade, our Math Teacher made all of the kids in class learn how to play chess, and we had tournaments all year long... I taught a few kids how to play, and that was kind of neat...
I was a good player as a kid, but now I realize how much I don't know about the game... but it's fun learning new things about Chess all the time... this certainly can be a lifetime hobby, and I hope it is with me.
