whats the best way to improve how many moves deep you can see?
Before you look first you must see.
By that I mean before you start to calculate a combination,
first you must obtain the abilty to see when there is a
combination in the position.
So I refer you to my post in the thread you started:
which sicilian to learn?
I know this works on correspondence chess, but doesn't OTB, for you aren't allowed: I usually set the position up on my board and start to play all alternatives out, you will not only play better moves, but as soon as you start doing this you will notice you can see more, and quicker.
Just remember, in chess nothing happens instantly, so it takes some time to develop some skill

Originally posted by bassothe analysis board does the same thing, however if you want to become good at chess I think it is good to play with diferent boards, knowing to play only on a 2D board will confuse you when playing OTB, the same can happen the other way around I expect....

I set up the position on the board, and write my calculations down on a sheet of paper without ever moving the pieces. So far, I've found this helpful. Sure, It will not teach you when to suspect a combination, or train you where to look, but it is excellent practice at visualizing a series of moves and weighing one possible route against another.
