When you are provisionally rated your rating is calculated as the running average of your opponents rating +400 for a win, -400 for a loss and +0 for a draw. If you have a provisional rating of 1600 and beat someone rated 500 your rating actually drops. It'll stop doing that when you stop being provisionally rated. As Ravello says, it's in the FAQ.
