Does anybody here have a good quality set for sale secondhand? I'm looking for a 4" high King with a base of about 1.75" and a board with 2" squares. I'd prefer Bud Rosewood pieces rather than ebony.

If you don't have a set for sale, but know of good sites to buy, then please post the links here.

Cheers,

ebay's worth checking for second hand sets
On ebay there are loads of quite nice looking sets from china with massive postage £50-£100. They all look quite old and rustic nothing factory made. Its quite annoying I would of got one if the postage was a reasonable price. I'm not sure about other sets on there, I haven't seen any good quality looking ones I would recomend on specific chess sites.

Cheers for that.

I'm looking for a Staunton style set. Ebay seems to have a lot of Tunisian/Chinese styles.

I'm in the market myself.

I have a glass set but it's a bitch to clean, and I plan on teaching my cousin as he grows up (as I start playing well).

Probably something marble, though I'd settle for wood it looked nice.

My biggest problem is always the knight. They look deformed on cheap sets. It's probably the first peice I look for if the king/queen hasn't caught my attention.

I agree the Knights will make or break the set for me.

I'd be especially vigilant about purchasing a set from China on ebay. If you enter a search for chess sets, especially if your search includes the term "antique", you will get pages and pages of what look like nice old sets. The problem is you can find that exact set at any given time. Usually you'll see the same item from the same seller using the same photograph listed over a dozen times despite the fact that the item is described as "rare". There may be some legitimate deals on sets from China, but to me it's not worth slogging through all this other stuff on the chance of finding it.
