I got paired against fierytorment in a tournament (so I couldn't refuse the game) and he was rated around 769! 😕 After seeing some very strong moves I clicked on his name and saw this message:
"I'm a 1800+++ player taking a break from Redhotpawn. Don't be fooled by my 769 rating. I'm much better than 750, thank you. Starting over....... resigning all my games, and starting fresh I'm back Baby!"
My problem is simple. I managed to beat him with White but lost with Black... but because he RESIGNED ALL HIS GAMES and dropped his rating down around 760 points, I lost 30 points! ðŸ˜
Feedback is welcome.

Originally posted by RahimKI agree that a ratings floor system should be used for entry to banded tournaments. But peoples ratings do vary; sometimes quite wildly. Factors affecting rating include taking on too many games, health issues, work load, going on holiday and being timed out... This could generate problems as well as solve them. I had two games against a 2000ish player who resigned almost all their other games and got down to around 1000 as a result and was quite put out that he didn't resign the ones against me. I decided the best thing to do was take it as a compliment that I'd managed to make the games interesting enough, my rating went back up again later.
rating floor should be used on this site. Its in OTB chess already so people cannot sandbag and win free money.
One option might be to have a moderator system where repeat offenders could be limited to 15 games (or some small number) of games - and have their rating reinstated using the provisional ratings system. That way there would be a disincentive to allow your rating to drop wildly, players would be protected against losing to someone who is much stronger than their rating suggests and they couldn't do it again as they couldn't resign more than 15 games at once (which assuming an average of 16 points per game comes to a 240 drop).
