Probably just a joke opening, or some people who wanted a REALLY quick draw.

1. Nf3 Nf6 is A05 and is the Reti Opening, these two moves give the game the ECO code. The game looks like a pointless agreed draw to me.

perhaps they both needed a draw to go through to the next round.

The opening is classified and assigned an ECO code no matter how good (or stupid the moves are) - it's just easy for future reference that's all. I've seen players open with 1. f3 followed by 2. Kf2 and this is classed as an (stupid!) opening too.

I've scored ~80% with that "stupid opening." Most of the games were 3 0 blitz, but one quick win was a correspondence game.

The ECO Codes are based on a well-developed tree.

Volume A encompasses games that do not begin 1.e4 or 1.d4, as well as games that begin 1.d4 without 1...d5 or 1...Nf6, and games beginning 1.d4 Nf6 without 2.c4, and games beginning 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 without 2...e6 or 2...g6.

A 0 ecompasses various games not beginning 1.c4, 1.d4, or 1.e4.

A 04 through A 09 encompasses games beginning 1.Nf3

A 04: games beginning 1.Nf3 without 1...Nf6 or 1...d5
A 05: games beginning 1.Nf3 Nf6
A 06: games beginning 1.Nf3 d5 without 2.g3 or 2.c4
A 07: games beginning 1.Nf3 d5 2.g3 without 2...c5
and so on.

The openings within the codes A 04- A 09 commonly are called the Reti, but many games that begin with 1.Nf3 will transpose into other openings. For example, 1.Nf3 c5 2.e4 will be classified in volume B, which covers half of the 1.e4 openings.

In the game cited at the beginning of this thread, the move 2.Ng1 is outside the ECO "book", so the classification stops at first move.

However, after 1.Nf3 Nf6 2.Ng1 Ng8, the game might have continued 3.d4 Nf6 4.c4 g6. Then, a proper ECO classification would begin with the letter D, as if move three had been the first move.

Thanks for the information on transpositions. Those always confused me. 😠

They confuse Chessmaster, too. At least they did the last version I used regularly (CM 7000). Chessbase does a better job of ECO classification.
