....because my Queen was the first piece to be taken. The thing is that my opponent's Queen took her, but I would have taken their Queen with a pawn on my next move. I'm guessing that there must be a rule to say that you lose if your Queen is the first piece to be taken. Is this the case? If so I've never heard this before.

Game 4990261 This one? It says you ran out of time and your opponent claimed win on time. There's no such rule about Queens.

You would have captured his queen with your knight on the next move.
But you lost because you were timed out.

Ok yeah you're all correct. He must have set the time limit on the game for a very short period and then claimed a win, the cheeky bugger. It must have been a one day limit with no timebank and I didn't notice. I had never heard of any rule that I was talking about, but I couldn't work out how I was supposed to have lost the game.
Sorry for wasting all of your time.

I'm a novice at chess, though I have played for some years off and on. I am trying to desperately get better, would anyone suggest good chess books?

Thanks,
K.

Yes, beware of those short time controls. 😉 I had been caught out with that quite a lot when I first started on the site.

One useful tip: Under My Settings -> My Challenge Settings, enter a Minimum timeout. This will at least avoid someone challenging you a game with time controls which would be undesirable.

As for Open Invites, just need to pay attention. 🙂
