1. e4 d5 { Scandinavian } 2. exd5 Qxd5 3. Nc3 Qd6 { I've seen GM's play Qd6 but this is an opening I do not play often myself at all, so don't know much theory } 4. Nf3 { d4 immediately is also an option to consider } 4... Nf6 5. d4 a6 { A slow, preventative move which may not strictly be necessary but it's not necessarily bad } 6. h3 { So of course I do similar } 6... Nc6 7. Be3 e5 8. dxe5 Nxe5 { Here I considered Qxd6 but eventually saw NxN with check, ruining my pawns before recapturing.... Nxe5 immediately also didn't seem good because of Qxe5 pinning my Bishop and then Bb4 is coming with pressure on c3 } 9. Be2 { This keeps things steady and it also brings me closer to castling, so doubly good } 9... Bf5 10. Qxd6 Bxd6 11. Nd4 { I played this with the idea that after Bg6, White has f4 and then f5 which appears to win a piece } 11... Bd7 { Liv no doubt saw all of that } 12. O-O { I was tempted to castle long, but thought Black's attack on the queenside would be faster so chickened out } 12... O-O { And here I got distracted a little by how diagonally symmetrical the board looked... if you rotate the board 180 degrees then it's the same apart from Kings and Rooks } 13. a3 { I was hoping Black would play h6.... computer even likes it! } 13... c5 { booooooo.... the one significant difference between the two sides exploited: Black has a c-pawn break, White doesn't } 14. Nf3 Bf5 { I saw Nxe5 to win a pawn, but after Bxe5, Bxc5 then Rfc8 I didn't like my choices plus I give the pawn back anyway } 15. Rac1 b6 16. Rfd1 { Here I saw if Black plays Rd8 I had NxN, BxN, RxR+, RxR then Bxa6 winning a pawn } 16... Rfd8 { And that's what happened! } 17. Nxe5 { ? Except Rxd6 was better as I would get two minor pieces for a Rook! (If Nxf3+ then Bxf3 and I'm hitting the Rook on a8)... I completely overlooked this } 17... Bxe5 18. Rxd8+ Rxd8 19. Bxa6 { I asked myself "OK, what have I missed?" } 19... Bxc3 { That's not too bad, ah, no the Rook comes back to a8 and Black wins the pawn back, darn } 20. bxc3 Ra8 { How about Rd1, which doesn't allow RxB due to back-rank mate!.... oh wait, no, her rating is nearly 200 ECF, she'll see it, darn } 21. Bd3 { At least here she has to take and fix my pawns, or else I keep the a-pawn } 21... Bxd3 22. cxd3 Rxa3 23. d4 { Just seemed best to me, the most principled option } 23... Nd5 { This reply was expected } 24. dxc5 Nxe3 { However now something I didn't consider at all was cxb6.... a piece sac, but look at Black's King, I can get my Rook on an open file and the Knight may have to give himself back } 25. fxe3 bxc5 { Now Kf2, or maybe Rc2 first and this game should be a dead draw... but in the moment I thought I saw a winning try } 26. c4 { ? The idea being that if Rxe3, I play Rd1 and after Black deals with the mate threat then I have Rd5, winning the c-pawn and creating a passer } 26... Rxe3 27. Rd1 f6 28. Rd5 Re5 { ! This was the move combination I missed.... I saw f6 but thought that was only good because the King comes out faster, but I missed the fact that it also supports Re5, defending the pawn } 29. Rxe5 { So now I'm thinking "welp, probably losing now" } 29... fxe5 30. Kf2 Kf7 31. Ke3 h5 { ? Often double-pushes of pawns during these situations lose valuable tempo, this also creates potential for White to create a blockade where the Black King cannot get through, for example if Black also plays g5 } 32. g3 { I didn't know it at the time, but engine analysis says this is a technical draw } 32... Kf6 33. Ke4 Ke6 34. g4 hxg4 35. hxg4 { Still a technical draw } 35... Kf6 36. Kd5 Kg5 { Now what I didn't even try to calculate was that, in this position, after Kxe5, both sides are 7 moves away from promoting a pawn to a Queen... it's worth mentioning I had 3mins 39secs on the clock on this move } 37. Kxc5 { ?? This loses... what I failed to realise now was that even though both sides may be promoting at the same time here... } 37... e4 38. Kd4 { (forced if I want a Queen) } 38... Kf4 { .....Black promotes first, then I promote on c8, where Black then delivers Qd1+ forcing my King on the c-file, then Qc1+ wins the Queen! } 39. c5 { I played the sequence out in game, just to demonstrate it } 39... e3 40. c6 e2 41. c7 e1=Q 42. c8=N Qd1+{ I wished my opponent a good Knight } 0-1 {Before resigning.... a good game, much enjoyed, but I will be kicking myself for the missed opportunities against a titled player for a short while. }
It's a shame that this encounter was not in person... playing such players without actually "meeting" them.
Let's just hope that live OTB chess is not too far over the horizon.
@64squaresofpainsaid It was an enjoyable game vs a tough opponent, rated ECF 196 and FIDE 2012.
Time controls were 45mins + 15secs increment
I've shared what thoughts I had during the game, mixed in with some post-game analysis.
I had White
4NCL div3 rnd3 - Zak Tomlinson (146) vs Olivia Smith (196)

All thoughts and comments welcomed 🙂
I stand in awe of you.
Just completed my 4th online tournament of the year. Still losing to the same group of 9 - 12 year old's that have lived on chess.com for fully 1/2 of their lives. Things are improving (with all the speed of a battery chicken!) 4 down , and a long way to go. 😳
This online league is one game every 2 weeks, on Tuesdays.
I'd much rather save competitive chess for weekend OTB tournaments, but sadly they are not available at the moment ðŸ˜
Keep trying mchill, perhaps experiment in different openings if you haven't done so already.
Several years later and I'm still adjusting my opening choices.
