I NEED to rant!

I NEED to rant!

Only Chess

Chess with short time controls just isn't chess in my mind.
It simply isn't chess.

I'm generally an easy going guy and much prefer to move at my own pace,
it's where I feel the most comfortable.

90mins + 30secs increment suits me just fine.
Correspondence chess? Even better! Just make a few moves a day!

Today I played a game in the 4ncl online league, where I'm in a team with a few OTB pals.
Time controls are 45min + 15secs

Lichess calls this 'classical', but it's absolutely not... it's more Rapid+

I had white, it was a French exchanged, which I typically do well in
and soon found myself in this position after 20 moves:

At this point, I had 25mins to my opponents 7mins.

Fast forward to the endgame where we reach this position,
I'm a pawn up after 40 moves:

I had 6mins, my opponent had 2mins, but he started blitzing by this point.

Then somehow I blundered the pawn and ended up losing by timeout on move 53
when the position was still perfectly drawn.
He still had 45 secs left, so in other words, he spent only 6 mins to my 25 mins in just 30 moves.

I wish covid would **** off so I don't have to play live online games anymore! ๐Ÿ˜

YES!!

Maybe I'm just getting old, but we seem to be living in the age of the short attention span. Bring back slower time controls and adjournments. Quality over quantity.

It's chess.
It's just different.

I love the sun; especially during the winter.
But that doesn't mean that I hate the sun when I get
sunburned by it, during the summer.

For me, the quest for the best move is an essential part of playing chess. "Action chess" makes this all but impossible, which is why I avoided such events after playing in a few and finding it immensely frustrating. (I'm not saying it's not "chess," but it's definitely not for me.)

It's like cricket.
20/20 or test match?
Completely different games with the same equipment.
All things change over time and there'll always be someone wanting to "invent" a different version of a game or sport thinking they are making improvements.
Take Chess 960 as an example.
Or going back even further -Rugby and then Rugby League.
I wouldn't entertain speed chess -or speed anything else for that matter but there will be those who prefer it.

@64squaresofpain
I remember reading once where David Bronstein said he thought the time control for all games should be 15 minutes, and another where he had ideas for quadruple round robin candidates tournaments with a 1 hour time control and a short coffee break between rounds.

Personally, I think the FIDE G/90 with a 30 second increment is almost perfect.

OTB with tournament time control, blitz, playing in the park with a peanut gallery of kibitzers, and correspondence each has its peculiar strategy and pitfalls.
