I've asked my opponent for the name of this defense, but I think he / she may not speak English. And _I_ don't speak Romanian! Can someone tell me the name of the defense he's using? I DON'T want a commentary on the game in progress--just the name of the opening. Never seen it before, but it looks playable:

Thanks! You know, I don't think I've ever seen it either here or OTB. Strange.

I think it's probably because dozens, if not several, books have been already written about it. Fischer's 1st win against Spassky in 1972...beautifully executed. Pretty sharp opening, however, like any other openings there's always the +'s and -'s. Good luck to your game. Both of you.

Wouldn't that be the Blumenfield Counter Gambit or you have to do 2.. Nf6 for that? I thought the Modern Benoni was d4 Nf6, c4 c5.

d4 Nf6, c4 c5 is just a benoni assuming black follows up with e5.
Modern benoni is ...e6 intending e6xd5 by black.
Blumenfeld is ..e6 intending white to exchange on e6 when combined with a pawn sac ...b5.
